NBC’s “TODAY” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie has chosen The Bowery Mission as her charity of choice during a two-week run as guest host of the iconic Jeopardy! game show.
Jeopardy! will donate funds to The Bowery Mission in an amount equaling the contestants’ cumulative winnings from June 14 to June 25. Since the passing of beloved host Alex Trebek in November of last year, the acclaimed game show has used a variety of guests hosts, including Katie Couric, Anderson Cooper, Mayim Bialik, Aaron Rodgers, and Dr. Oz.
For Guthrie, raising funds for The Bowery Mission is an opportunity to call attention to New York City’s rising homelessness population — a crisis further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. In a city of more than 8.3 million people, nearly one in every 106 New Yorkers is homeless.
The Bowery Mission has served New Yorkers in crisis since the 1870s. Each hot meal and each night of shelter serves as an invitation to further life-transforming care experienced within a loving community of support.
“I chose The Bowery Mission [because] it’s needed now more than ever,” said Guthrie in an interview with Jeopardy!. “It is feeding the hungry. It’s about helping the poor. [When] people are in their lowest moments, The Bowery Mission says, ‘Come in, we have a place for you to stay. We’ll help you get back on your feet, you have a second chance, you are loved, you are special.’”
Guthrie has been a passionate friend and supporter of the Mission since 2018, when she hosted the organization’s Inspiring Hope luncheon to raise funds for women overcoming homelessness.
“We are so deeply grateful to Savannah Guthrie for standing in compassion with The Bowery Mission and bringing public attention to New York City’s growing need,” says James Winans, President & CEO of The Bowery Mission. “Together, we will continue to stand with our vulnerable neighbors, offering essential meals, shelter, and residential programs in this time of heightened challenge.”
“Jeopardy!” airs weekdays on ABC at 7 p.m. Episodes may also be livestreamed via the FuboTV, Sling TV, Hulu, YouTube TV, and AT&T TV Now apps.
